Character Concept. Part I - Animal Study

For the next brief, I started to work on the Animal-Human Character concept.

I decided to choose the beautiful, Magnifique, charming and insanely smart creature - Axolotl.

They can also be called Mexican Walking Fish.

And those cute pink horns are actually their external gills. (Thank you Wikipedia)

Axolotls are indeed weird amphibians. I started to research and sketch them in the various poses. It's interesting how different looks its face from different angles.

I think sketching is an essential part of any animal study. You have to feel comfortable to draw as quickly as possible the creature, to feel it's curve and proportions.

After sketching, I started to investigate the colour palettes. The are several tones and colours for the axolotls, but most popular is this:

Light Pink with bright Pink Gills.

In the next step, I will be creating the actual Animal-Human concept based on this small study.
